Elliot Garden Naturescape Project

The Elliot Garden Naturescape Project was started in the 2006-2007 academic year in an attempt to try and restore the once prominent Garry oak grassland ecosystem that historically covered the majority of the UVic grounds. Reintroducing soil disturbance by tilling was the start of the project. Several varieties of native plant species were brought back to the restoration site. Restoration efforts were challenged soon after the initial activities by rabbits getting through the fence and devouring the newly planted species. Several successive modifications to help deter the rabbits took place after the failure of the original cedar post fence. Unfortunately, monitoring and evaluation has died down recently due to lack of volunteers and as a result the health of the project has greatly deteriorated.

In November 2007 a restorative project began as a natural areas garden located near the Elliot building. However, the area is undervalued due to the lack of knowledge. Most people walking past are unaware that the fenced off site is a restoration project that benefits both students and the environment of University of Victoria. Plans have recently been created to improve the Elliot Garden through the installation of a sign, which promotes and educates the public. The sign will most likely be created of wood, and readers will be made aware of the restorative efforts that have taken place. The main goal of the project is improved communication and to attract awareness about this garden. It’s important that people are aware of ecological restoration activities on UVic’s campus as it contributes to a healthy community and can help connect people with the land.
