Garry Oak Bus Loop Restoration Design Project

Garry oak ecosystems are native to Vancouver Island. Over time these ecosystems have become endangered mainly through habitat loss. One spot on campus where Garry Oak trees can be found is beside the bus loop. The high human traffic negatively affects the vegetation and water absorption by the compaction of the soil. As a result, plans have been created to restore the area, and preserve the culturally valued Garry oak trees. A fence will be installed to protect the site from people and rabbits will be put in, garbage and recycling bins will be made available, along with signage to explain the restoration project. Along with soil reclamation, native plants will be planted to improve the vegetation within the site. Goals of the project include increasing public awareness concerning Garry Oak ecosystems, engaging the community, and improving the area’s aesthetics.
