Cunningham Woods
Cunningham Woods is a small 1-acre Douglas Fir forest area located inside ring road on the University of Victoria's campus grounds. The University planned to build on the site in 2000, but a lobbying campaign resulted in a freeze on development being placed on the area. In 2016, however, the University of Victoria adopted a new campus plan, identifying a portion of the Cunningham Woods as a 'protected area', and a portion as a 'potential building site' (see image below from page 61 of Campus Plan 2016).
If you're concerned about the future protection of Cunningham Woods and other natural areas on UVic campus, get involved. By raising awareness of ecosystems on UVic campus and involving students in restoration activities in Cunningham Woods, the University may consider putting a moratorium on the the area. You can get involved in restoration activities in Cunningham Woods by joining the Ecological Restoration Volunteer Network, or joining the Facebook Group.
