Garry Oak & Camas Meadow

With Garry Oak ecosystems only existing in about 5% of the areas it once was, restoration projects are vital for the protection and rejuvenation of the most biologically diverse (and stunning!) ecosystem in British Columbia.

The Garry Oak Ecosystem Restoration Team (link is external) (GOERT) is also involved in restoration projects in the region. Get involved!

Garry Oak Restoration

This is a joint restoration project between Facilities Management and the Restoration of Natural Systems (RNS) Program. What was historically a Garry oak meadow was overrun by a variety of invasive grasses that were introduced with the settlement of Europeans centuries ago. This project was started in 2003 in an area of approximately 3500 square meters. Over the last few years field experiments have been used to compare different soil preparation methods and planting regimes in order to find the best to deal with the control of exotic species and reintroducing native species. The hope is to restore the area back to its historical Garry oak system. Unfortunately, restoration monitoring and evaluation in the area has dropped off because of sparse volunteers.
