Apple Orchard

In 2008, a group of Environmental Studies students in ES 341, Ecological Restoration, initiated an agricultural restoration project on the neglected CJVI Lands apple orchard. Their intention was to reconnect university course-work to the university's landscape through hands-on, experiential learning. They pruned 14 trees and built bee boxes to encourage pollination. One of these students, Ellie Knight, produced the map below to record which trees have been pruned and by whom.

Garry Oak & Camas Meadow

With Garry Oak ecosystems only existing in about 5% of the areas it once was, restoration projects are vital for the protection and rejuvenation of the most biologically diverse (and stunning!) ecosystem in British Columbia.

The Garry Oak Ecosystem Restoration Team (link is external) (GOERT) is also involved in restoration projects in the region. Get involved!

Cunningham Woods

Cunningham Woods is a small 1-acre Douglas Fir forest area located inside ring road on the University of Victoria's campus grounds. The University planned to build on the site in 2000, but a lobbying campaign resulted in a freeze on development being placed on the area. In 2016, however, the University of Victoria adopted a new campus plan, identifying a portion of the Cunningham Woods as a 'protected area', and a portion as a 'potential building site' (see image below from page 61 of Campus Plan 2016).

South Woods

The South Woods, located at the University of Victoria, is one of the last remaining natural areas on campus, and is frequented by students, faculty, and community members. This valuable ecosystem acts as a refuge for many animals, and has significant capabilities in its water management services. Restoration within the South Woods:
